First Nationally STEM-Certified Program in New Jersey Coming to Middle Schoolers

Hudson Montessori School in Jersey City makes a bold move to bring its robust curriculum and premier STEAM program to its next grade level of students: Middle School. The school currently serves children age 2 to sixth grade, and starting September 2022, the school is proud to bring its Montessori, time-tested curriculum to seventh and eighth graders.

“This program has a rigorous academic curriculum along with collaborative, project-based learning opportunities. Our Middle School will give students a way to use their skills in meaningful ways,” says Gina Reeves, the School’s Director.

“We are continuing our mission to create independent thinkers who apply their knowledge to real-life settings and grow into responsible, compassionate citizens of the world,” said Hudson Montessori School’s Founder Gracy Jolly. “We are excited that Dr. Grace Sanvictores will be our Middle School Director. She has been with our school since we opened in 2009. Her determination helped develop our STEAM program into the first of its kind, and we know she will pour that same tenacity and forethought into our Middle School program.” Alongside Dr. Sanvictores, Michelle Velho, the School’s STEAM Director, they have developed an interdisciplinary curriculum to meet the highest middle school standards.

We will work with each student to help them build an academic portfolio, preparing them to apply to the high school of their choosing,” said Dr. Sanvictores. “As the first nationally STEM-certified campus in New Jersey, it is our honor to have our cutting-edge STEAM program continue to move forward in seventh and eighth grades.”

Hudson Montessori differentiates itself from other schools by how it applies its Montessori principles and integrates its STEAM program. The Middle School also sets itself apart by formally adopting the design-thinking process—a common process used today by businesses, entrepreneurs, and universities for developing new products. Using empathy, students learn to set aside assumptions and gain real-world perspective by stepping into the shoes of the user by looking at a problem from the user’s perspective. Each student will be part of a capstone project, incorporating student collaboration, applying local and global perspectives, and solving real-life problems from conceptualization to development and beyond.

“Innovation ignites a child’s curiosity,” said Dr. Sanvictores. “It inspires a child to explore, tinker, develop. And through that experience, the student learns so much along the way—persistence, determination, trial and error, and ultimately, knowledge derived by the hands-on process. We believe the future workforce needs creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship to thrive.”

Hudson Montessori’s Middle School curriculum exceeds core academic standards, including data literacy and science, research and development, music, art, performing arts, Spanish, physical education, and other exciting elective and after-school offerings.
