Balloons and bubbles were accompanied by the sounds of music and laughter on Regent Street this past weekend as Hudson Montessori School welcomed about 1,000 guests to our 17th Annual Social Studies Fair and Street Carnival. Our entire campus at Liberty Harbor in downtown Jersey City was transformed into a vibrant celebration of culture and community.
We thank Mayor James Solomon and Councilperson Eleana Little for attending and supporting our cherished community tradition. The street carnival was made possible by a generous donation from Provident Bank.
From the moment families, neighbors, and elected officials arrived, the atmosphere felt electric. Children bounced in colorful inflatable houses while parents lined the sidewalks, stopping to admire face-painted tigers, butterflies, and superheroes weaving through the crowd. A balloon artist twisted play swords and long-stemmed flowers for eager hands as music drifted through the street carnival, and guests enjoyed tasty morsels from local food trucks.
Inside, the excitement continued as classrooms were transformed into museum-like galleries featuring immersive decorations inspired by this year’s theme, Tapestry of Cultures. Hallways buzzed with families moving from room to room, children holding treasure maps for the scavenger-hunt-style game as they explored exhibits created entirely by students and teachers.
One classroom transported visitors to the Caribbean Islands, while another explored the landscapes and traditions of Mountain Cultures. Nearby, guests stepped into galleries dedicated to Indigenous Peoples, Ports & Waterways, Storytelling Across Cultures, India and China, Brazil and Colombia, Kenya and South Africa, and more. Every space reflected months of student research, creativity, and collaboration.
Perhaps the most exciting sight of the day was watching students proudly tell onlookers about their exhibits. Children eagerly explained facts they had learned, pointed out handmade projects, and answered questions with confidence. Children collected jeweled stickers and chocolate coins, filling out their treasure maps as they visited each classroom gallery.
The excitement did not end on Saturday. Today, Monday, May 11, students returned to the classroom galleries for a special school-wide museum field trip. Classroom by classroom, children toured the exhibits, guided by their teachers, as their teachers linked the exhibits in other classrooms to those in their own. The experience gave students the opportunity to appreciate one another’s work and to continue learning from the many cultures represented throughout the buildings.
We thank our dedicated community partners and local food truck vendors who helped bring the celebration to life, including the face-painting makeup artist and the balloon-animal artist from Parties for Peanuts.
