At Hudson Montessori School, learning goes far beyond textbooks. We believe children learn best when they can experience the world around them firsthand. By bringing nature into the classroom and creating hands-on opportunities to explore, students build curiosity, responsibility, empathy, and a deeper connection to the world around them.
Whether caring for animals, observing life cycles, or exploring ecosystems, our students are active participants in their learning every day. Our teachers regularly create meaningful experiences to help lessons come alive in ways students will remember long after they leave the classroom. This spring, we have had several lessons all about living things.
Watching Caterpillars Become Butterflies
Our younger students recently had the opportunity to raise caterpillars and watch them transform into butterflies right before their eyes. As they observed each stage of the life cycle, students learned about growth, patience, and metamorphosis.
Caring for the caterpillars helped students develop responsibility and curiosity, while the transformation itself became a beautiful reminder of nature’s cycles for all creatures.
Raising and Releasing Trout
After months of caring for baby trout in the classroom, our Middle Schoolers proudly released them into their natural habitat. Along the way, they learned about ecosystems, conservation, water quality, and the importance of protecting our environment.
One of the most meaningful moments of the project was writing letters to their trout before release day. Students reflected on what they learned, the care they provided, and the connection they built throughout the experience.
Caring for Baby Chicks
Our students also cared for a dozen newly hatched chicks this year. Our Middle Schoolers named them, maintained them daily, and they quickly became the classroom’s favorite activity, loved by all of our students and staff. Each grade level learned about baby chicks and how they grow, what they need to stay healthy, and how to handle them gently and safely. Getting to hold and care for the chicks helped students build patience, confidence, and empathy while learning the importance of caring for living creatures.
After their time in the classroom, the chicks were rehomed to Saratoga Farms and Country Store in Egypt, New Jersey, where they will continue to grow and thrive.
As our school year comes to a close, we are reminded that some of the most important lessons happen through real experiences. By bringing learning to life and encouraging students to connect with nature, we help children grow into curious learners, compassionate caretakers, and thoughtful members of their community.
