We are proud to celebrate two of our middle school writers who recently earned recognition in the Jersey City Public Library Edgar Allan Poe Story Writing Contest, a competition open to students in grades 6–12 across Jersey City.
Hudson Montessori students Dane S. and Afsheen K. both placed in the contest, which challenged young writers to create suspenseful stories inspired by the dark and mysterious style of Edgar Allan Poe. Dane earned second place, and Afsheen took home third place.
Dane’s story immediately pulls readers into a tense moment of revenge and suspense:
“How dare he! How could he dare? To do what he did, the atrocities, it would require a heart no softer than diamond! I walked right into it. Blindly, into his trap. He will pay for it, oh, he will. But how?”
Those were my thoughts exactly one month ago. “Atrocities.” I wouldn’t consider it that anymore. Compared to what I’ve done now. Ever since he did the deed, I was already planning my revenge. Oh, how sweet it would be! He would haunt me no more. It was the night of New Year’s Eve when I decided to carry out my plan. “How ironic!” I thought, “A day of joy and celebration becomes the day of death for Marco.”
We love seeing our students explore their creativity and experiment with different writing styles. Congratulations to Dane and Afsheen on this exciting achievement. We cannot wait to see what they write next!
