Hands-On Learning at Hudson Montessori School With Students and Parents
It was a week full of learning beyond the textbook for students and their parents at Hudson Montessori School. And, it was another wonderful opportunity for us to connect as a school community too.
At our Montessori Journey evening event held for parents, teachers welcomed them into their child’s classrooms to learn how our students learn using the Montessori method, with hands-on activities for parents to roll up their sleeves and learn by doing. Similarly, In the same week, our students from first through eighth grades waded into the Hudson River Basin with seine nets, buckets, and measuring equipment to take part in applied science with researchers from the Department of Environmental Conservation and Columbia University.
Our Montessori Journey: Parents Hands-On Experience
We invited parents of our Toddler, Bridge, Primary, and Lower Elementary students to their student’s classroom for our annual Montessori Journey event. With guidance from our teachers, parents experienced the Montessori work cycle from their child’s perspective, exploring materials and activities in Math, Language Arts, Practical Life, and Sensorial learning. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to see how these classroom materials foster a love of learning that starts in the toddler years.
A Day in the Life of the Hudson River: Students Apply Real-World Science
Our students headed outdoors for the annual Day in the Life of the Hudson River and Harbor. Working alongside teachers and community partners, they collected water-quality data, explored the river’s ecosystem, and learned more about the importance of caring for our local waterways. Our older students also shared their knowledge with younger classmates, helping them get familiar with the tools and techniques used in scientific research.
We thank our teachers, parents, and community partners for making these experiences possible.
