Hudson Montessori School once again took part in the annual Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor event on October 15, serving as a proud host site at Jersey City’s Morris Canal Basin. This was the 23rd year for this large-scale event, organized by Columbia University in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program. This event brings together thousands of students to selected sites along the Hudson River from first grade up through college to explore the health and biodiversity of the Hudson River and New York Harbor.
Students in first through eight grades from Hudson Montessori joined scientists and educators in collecting and analyzing data on the Hudson River ecosystem. Using tools like seine nets, minnow pots, and water-testing kits, the students caught and released fish, observed tidal patterns, and recorded data on water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen levels. These observations help researchers monitor the condition of the river and deepen students’ understanding of how scientific fieldwork is an essential part of environmental stewardship.
Events like Day in the Life of the Hudson River reflect Hudson Montessori School’s philosophy of making the world our classroom. By engaging directly with the Hudson River ecosystem, students experience real-world science in action, gaining an appreciation for conservation, collaboration, and the interconnectedness of natural systems. The school’s participation inspires young learners to become curious, responsible caretakers of the planet.
Hudson Montessori School, located in downtown Jersey City, serves children aged 2 to 8th grade. Its STEM-certified campus is the only one of its kind in New Jersey, featuring STEM-certified teachers who meet the highest standards set by the National Institute for STEM Education. The school invites parents to attend an open house to learn more about its scholastic programs and community-based initiatives.
