Montessori in a Minute: The Division Board

Montessori education values hands-on learning experiences that help children make sense of new ideas in an exciting way. In our Primary classroom, the Division Board is a wonderful math material that introduces children to division through movement, touch, and discovery. The Division Board shows our students that division is not difficult or stressful, but rather something they already know how to do: sharing equally.

The material is made of a wooden board with numbered spaces, a set of small markers, and beads used to represent quantities. The child places a marker on the number that represents the divisor, then uses beads to represent the dividend. One by one, the beads are shared evenly among the groups until none remain.

For example, if a child is working with 12 divided by 3, they place the marker at 3 and then distribute 12 beads evenly among the 3 groups. When all the beads have been shared, the child counts the beads in one group to find the answer. Through this process, division becomes something they can see and feel rather than just memorize.

The Importance of the Division Board

The Division Board provides children with a strong foundation in division by allowing them to experience the concept firsthand. Instead of being told what division means, they discover it through their own work.

The board controls for error, and students can catch their own mistakes and correct them in real time. If the beads do not divide evenly or some are left over, the child can immediately notice and try again, figuring it out independently. This builds confidence, patience, and problem-solving skills.

Beyond division, children strengthen counting skills, concentration, and fine motor control as they carefully place each bead. Students learn math while also developing coordination and focus.

Most importantly, the Division Board helps children see math as approachable and fun! By working with their hands and discovering answers for themselves, they develop a positive connection to learning mathematics.
